Wiggle and Wobble: Two related videos

These two videos are very much in the spirit of the junkbots project (and I wish I had created them) - two fantastic robotic builds. Wobblebot (construction details can be found at: http://researchparent.com/homemade-wobblebot/ ) Wrigglebot (details can be found at: http://researchparent.com/homemade-wigglebot/ ) which is a drawing bot. The plan is to try out some of the ideas with in the junkbots project. If you would like to know more about the Junkbots project contact scott.turner@northampton.ac.uk

ArtBot

Recently a post on a scoop.it site Primary Robots & Coding curated by Steve Thomas (His twitter feed is a great resource  @ stephendathomas )  caught my attention - Art "Robot" ( http://www.instructables.com/id/Art-Robot/ ). Essentially a similar idea, but it many ways a more sophisticated idea, than my drawing bots . The Art "Robot" takes an idea similar to the  drawing bots  of using junk to make drawing 'robot'; then kicks it up a gear. The use of the ice-lolly stick push it further into the area of reusing materials (instead of my broken propellors - I wish I had thought of the lolly sticks). The cork for adding weight to a light motor is clever. Have a look at  http://www.instructables.com/id/Art-Robot/   for more details of how they built theirs. Art Robots are not just being made from 'junk' another curated post from  Primary Robots & Coding  has Lego and Scratch being used to make drawing robots . I plan to i...

Return to Lab_13

The junkbots project was carried as one of the activities at the celebration of two years of Lab_13 at Irchester Community Primary School . Three groups spent around an hour developing the drawing junkbots (an example of what one is can be found in these image). The session basic revolves around two main activities: - Showing that a motor can be made to vibrate and can they think of a way to use this and other materials around them (make sure there are pens/pencils around) to make a drinks can move. - Next stage is can they modify their robot to make it draw. Details and session plans can be found at:  http://junkbots.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/junkbot-project-case-study-and-session.html   If you would like to know more about the Junkbots project contact scott.turner@northampton.ac.uk

Wootton Primary School

On the 30th April 2012 the junkbots project went to Wootton Primary's STEM club. The task was challenging to design and to build junkbots that can draw in less than 45 minutes...and they did. Great work and some engineers/technologists for the future. Thank you to Mrs Meadows and all the children of the STEM club for inviting me. Fun - Drawing junkbot

Here is a junkbot my 7-year old son and I came up with at the weekend. A bit of fun - a junkbot that draws based on a bashed up drinks can, pens, straws, motor, broken fan and lots of tape! The last picture has some of the shapes the junkbots produced. If you would like to know more about the Junkbots project contact scott.turner@northampton.ac.uk
